Artist Statement: Tourmaline Series
Randolph Stow’s 1963 novel Tourmaline has been haunting me for a while now; it describes a barren, waterless future in a town visited by pain, hope, salvation and myth. I don’t understand the novel, really, so its ambiguity has lodged inside me like a splinter, and making these objects has felt like digging away at it, in the hope of extracting some relief. Tourmaline has lent these works their desert colours, the shapes of an abandoned mine site, and a dry, dusty anxiety about the weather.
